It’s rare to feel filled with inspiration and buzzing with a sense of opportunity after a media launch, but that’s what happened to Karen and I after we went to the HerSay party on Monday night.
Held at Bloomberg’s impressive central London offices, over wine and sushi we met an incredible range of expert women from all ages and backgrounds. From barristers to charity workers, authors to social entrepreneurs, and political campaign managers, it was a dazzling collection of some of the most talented women working today.
HerSay launched earlier this year as a free media resource centre for female experts. Shockingly, the media landscape has up until now, featured three-quarters male experts. Women’s voices have been shut out of setting the news agenda.
Founded by Jo Tanner and Kirsty Walker of iNHouse Communications, HerSay aims to redress this imbalance, and as Jo explained in her speech, “The point is to enable media to find more female spokespeople and for more women to put themselves forward as experts in their chosen field. The media do want to see more women – it’s just that often they’ve been hard to find!”
HerSay, and The Women’s Room, another organisation which campaigns on this issue, are already making a difference – Sky TV have improved their ratio of female experts from one in five, to one in three.
Jo also made the point that when it comes to self-promotion, women are often their own worst enemies at not putting themselves forward. “Many women don’t believe they can do it, that they’re not interesting enough or they don’t have enough to say and all I can really say is sorry – HerSay doesn’t do excuses,” declared Jo.
As part of the resource, HerSay will be offering media training courses in conjunction with Karen and I at Nine Media Training – helping women gain the confidence and knowledge that will arm them with the tools to succeed in the media landscape.
It was a thrilling, energising evening, with a wonderful, friendly vibe that saw us make some great new connections. And like the best evenings, it ended with more champagne and laughs in a nearby bar for the after-party!
